Amazon General Ranking vs. Kindle Ranking
There are two different ranking systems in Amazon: the Kindle ranking system and the
general ranking system for Amazon Books.
The easiest and fastest way to move up the ranking system is to improve your Kindle
Rank. It’s easier to move up in the Kindle rankings as compared to the general ranking.
While the Amazon Best Sellers list is a good indicator of how well a product is selling
overall, it doesn’t always indicate how well an item is selling among other similar items.
Category and subcategory best seller lists were created to highlight an item’s rank in the
categories or subcategories where it really stands out.
Here is what you need to remember: Ranking is important in specific categories and

If you want to change your category in the general rankings for your paperback, you
have to call and email Amazon and request a change. (If you need help with this,
Michelle’s team can do it for you!)
For Kindle, you just have to login to KDP and choose your category. But what can be
confusing is that you may not see some categories when you’re in KDP. This is because
Amazon changes their categories constantly based on buyer’s habits and feedback.
Remember, choose a category that is the best match for you and has low competition.
Never choose a category just because it has low competition.
As with the main Amazon Best Sellers list, these category rankings are based on
Amazon.com sales and are updated hourly. However, you will ONLY see a change in
your rankings if you’re on the Top 100 of your category. For example, when this call
was made, my book was Top 23 in its category. By the time this report was made a
several hours later, the book has moved down to Top 25 in its category.

The reason why you want to show up in your category is because it will improve your
Amazon rankings and your visibility. You will show up on “Customers Who Bought This
Item Also Bought” section of other books, which is huge! For example, the widely
popular book. The $100 StartUp, is showing up on this section of page for Brand DNA.
To be associated with this book is huge because everyone is raving about it.

If you’re not showing up in your category, it may be because of the following reasons:
• You’re not in top 100 of your category
• Amazon is not updating your category
If you are absolutely isure that your ranking should go up, you can contact Amazon and
find out what is happening. You can also log-in to your KDP account, edit your
categories, and resave it.
